The driver uses a gearbox to accommodate the fact that Internal Combustion engines have a slanted power profile that varies according to the speed in which it turns. That is low power at low revolutions, increasing to high power described as torque at approximately 2500 revolutions per minute and fairly flat after that. The driver needs to move his vehicle at different speeds depending on conditions. He gets the best result by changing the speed of rotation of the wheels whilst running the engine at high torque revolutions. He does this by using a gearbox.
